Activist Dele Farotimi has criticized Nigerians who are celebrating the actions of a Naval officer who challenged the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over a disputed plot of land.
In a statement, Farotimi questioned the legality of the orders given to the officer, noting that military personnel are expected to operate under the rule of law, not personal or political directives. “The soldiers at Lekki Tollgate were obeying orders, the ones at Odi were obeying orders, and those who killed over 430 Shiites in Zaria were also following orders,” he said, warning that blind obedience could have dangerous consequences.
Farotimi urged Nigerians to prioritize the law and truth over political theatrics, even if it means critiquing actions against unpopular figures. He also cautioned that the enemy of one’s enemy is not necessarily a friend, highlighting the risks of aligning with individuals based solely on opposition to others.
The activist’s comments come amid widespread public discourse praising the Naval officer for reportedly standing up to Wike’s intervention, a stance that has polarized opinions across social media and news outlets.
Farotimi concluded by emphasizing that legality and accountability must remain paramount in resolving disputes involving public officials and security agencies.
