Adamawa lawmaker speaks on succeeding Yakubu Dogara as Speaker

A Federal lawmaker representing Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub said, he would succeed Rt. Hon Yakubu Dogara as Speaker in the 9th House of Representatives in June this year.

Speaking in Abuja when playing host to members of a sociocultural group, Igbos for One Nigeria (IFON), Hon. Buba said he understands the political and cultural differences of members, noting that he would turn that into legislative advantage.

Buba said, the circumstances that preluded emergence of Yakubu Dogara as House Speaker made the lower Chambers to achieve fair results, adding that with APC in the lead, the 9th House of Representatives would be better off.

“I recall that in 2015, Hon. Yakubu Dogara emerged Speaker against the party position, and subsequent development made it difficult for us to achieve results.”

The Adamawa lawmaker was optimistic that it would not be difficult dealing with legislative matters as sizeable number of experienced lawmakers were returned, adding that the lower chamber would provide unfettered access for the first timers to learn.

The lawmaker who won his second tenure promised more engaging programmes for his constituents in the next four years.

He vowed to continue to defend the cause of his constituents irrespective of tribal and political differences.

“Today, no matter your tribe, religion or political party you belong in my constituency, I do not care. What is important to me is the impact we are making on people who suffered pains inflicted by insurgency, poverty and unemployment.”

“This is why as part of the Northeast, we are asking that the position of Speaker, House of Representatives be retained in our geopolitical zone by our Party leadership and the entire country.”

“As a member of the APC, I want to succeed my brother, Speaker Dogara so I can continue from where he stopped and be able to bring the programmes that I run in my constituency these past years to all parts of Nigeria in order to address the heightening cases of unemployment and youth restiveness in some parts of the country.”

“In fact, if you go round the Northeast, you will cry out of pity for the Zone.”

Earlier in their address, members of the socio-cultural group described the lawmaker as a detribalised Nigeria who was committed to his constituents in the face of terrorism.

Led by Comrade Ifeanyi Igbokwe, the group urged the lawmaker to use his wealth of experience to advance the cause of his people.
