Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has defended his earlier promise of improved electricity supply within two weeks, stating that Nigeria’s power sector recorded a gradual rise in generation despite ongoing national outages.
Data covering March 28 to April 10, 2026, showed that electricity generation increased from about 3,951MW to over 4,300MW. The minister’s office attributed the improvement to better gas supply to power plants and improved coordination within the sector.
Gas supply to thermal stations reportedly rose from around 605 million standard cubic feet per day to over 704 mmscfd within the period. Operational indicators also showed improvement, with mechanical availability peaking above 7,796MW, while usable operational capacity rose from about 4,208MW to nearly 4,694MW, indicating better efficiency in power generation.
Adelabu said the trend reflects a gradual recovery driven by reforms in the gas-to-power chain. He also announced the creation of a monitoring committee to identify bottlenecks, improve coordination, and ensure more stable gas supply to electricity generation companies.
He maintained that while challenges persist, the sector is showing measurable progress and further improvements are expected in the coming weeks as reforms continue.
