Human rights lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to order the immediate discontinuance of the prosecution of individuals standing trial over their alleged participation in the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest.
In a statement addressed to the police chief, Ejimakor said the IGP’s recent declaration on respecting human rights would “ring hollow” unless concrete steps are taken to halt what he described as unjust prosecutions.
According to him, those facing trial over the protest “committed no crime known to law,” insisting that their actions fell within their constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and expression.
The lawyer urged the police leadership to demonstrate commitment to civil liberties by discontinuing the cases and upholding the rule of law.
