A mother of four and an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) has alleged that her father-in-law forcefully took over her late husband’s properties, leaving her and her children in distress.
The officer brought her case to the Brekete Family, narrating a series of events she described as traumatic and unjust, beginning with a medical emergency during childbirth.
According to her, complications arose after a cesarean section for her fourth child when doctors allegedly left her placenta inside her body. She said she later underwent multiple corrective surgeries. During this period, she claimed her husband’s family abandoned her in the hospital, citing cultural beliefs that it was inappropriate for medical personnel to see a married woman unclothed.
Upon discharge, she said she was denied access to her matrimonial home on the instruction of her father-in-law, forcing her to relocate to her family house.
The situation reportedly worsened when her husband accused her of infidelity. She said she was summoned by his family to their village to swear an oath of innocence, which she complied with, while her husband allegedly refused to appear.
The dispute later moved to court, where her husband filed for divorce and sought custody of their children. She agreed to the divorce, with custody arrangements granting her full custody of the youngest child and shared custody of the three others.
However, shortly after the court proceedings, her husband reportedly died following a brief illness.
The ASP now alleges that her father-in-law took advantage of the situation to seize control of the family’s assets. She claimed he evicted her two eldest children from the house, took possession of a car she purchased after a peacekeeping mission, and began collecting her late ex-husband’s salary.
She further alleged that he has been renting out parts of the property for personal gain and is attempting to sell the house, leaving her and her children without shelter or financial support.
The case, which has sparked public concern, is currently being handled for mediation and awareness by the Brekete Family.
The ASP is seeking intervention and justice, calling for authorities to address what she describes as unlawful dispossession and protect the rights of her children.
