Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has slammed the conduct of local government elections in Rivers State, describing the exercise as “an awful absurdity and a travesty to the very notion of elective democracy.”
Atiku, in a statement on Sunday, accused the state’s “occupation government” of lacking legitimacy to organise such a crucial process, insisting that the polls were conducted in a “shameful and shambolic manner” to hand the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) undue advantage.
He warned that the President Bola Tinubu administration was taking Nigeria on a “dangerous curve” and urged well-meaning Nigerians, the international community, and the country’s democratic partners to pay close attention to developments in Rivers State.
The former Vice President further called on all opposition parties in the state to reject the outcome of the polls, maintaining that the exercise was extraneous to the law.
Atiku also expressed solidarity with the people of Rivers State, who he said had become victims of “political brigandry” by a power cabal determined to subvert their democratic rights at all costs.
