A bold and forward-thinking agricultural agenda championed by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah is fast redefining the nexus between food security, economic growth, and community safety in Enugu State, with key stakeholders affirming its transformative impact at a high-level climate training in Awgu.

At the forefront of this endorsement is the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, who declared that Governor Mbah’s strategic investment in agriculture is not only boosting productivity but also strengthening security across rural communities.
Speaking during the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) Downscaling and Stakeholders’ Training, organized by the Enugu State Government in collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on April 9, 2026, Hon. Okolo described agriculture as “the bedrock of sustainable development and a powerful tool for peacebuilding.”

“Our Governor has demonstrated visionary leadership by leveraging agriculture to tackle multiple challenges, including insecurity. Through consistent support—ranging from provision of farming tools to continuous farmer training—he is empowering communities and restoring confidence in rural livelihoods,” Okolo stated.
A Climate-Smart Revolution in Motion
The training programme, part of a broader “Train the Trainer” initiative, brought together policymakers, agricultural experts, and grassroots stakeholders to deepen climate awareness and promote adaptive farming techniques in the face of changing weather patterns.
Delivering the keynote address, the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Patrick Ubru Nwabueze, underscored the critical role of climate intelligence in enhancing agricultural output and safeguarding food systems.
Experts at the event emphasized that integrating accurate seasonal forecasts into farming decisions can significantly improve yields, reduce losses, and build resilience among farmers.
Building Resilience Beyond the Farm
In a unique and holistic approach, the programme also addressed the psychological impact of climate change. A mental health session led by Uzoamaka Nwachukwu shed light on eco-anxiety among farmers, offering practical strategies for emotional resilience in uncertain climatic conditions.
Further reinforcing the scientific backbone of the initiative, Professor Ifeanyi Christian Enete highlighted the urgent need for climate-resilient agricultural practices, noting that sustainable development in Enugu State depends on the ability of farmers to adapt to evolving environmental realities.
Empowering Communities, Securing the Future
Participants were also briefed on the 2026 National Seasonal Climate Prediction and Enugu-specific projections, equipping them with actionable insights to guide farming activities across the state.
The event concluded with an interactive session and strategic networking, fostering collaboration among stakeholders committed to driving agricultural transformation.
With the “Train the Trainer” model set to cascade knowledge to grassroots farmers, stakeholders expressed optimism that Enugu State is on a clear path toward a resilient, food-secure, and economically vibrant future.
Campaign Spotlight: #AgroSecurityEnugu
As the state continues to align agriculture with security and prosperity, the emerging campaign theme #AgroSecurityEnugu captures the essence of Governor Mbah’s vision—where empowered farmers, informed by climate science, become the frontline defenders of both food systems and community stability.
Indeed, in Enugu State, agriculture is no longer just a means of livelihood—it is a strategy for peace, growth, and a sustainable future.
