Bandits Demand ₦100m from Kebbi Community, Threaten Attack

Residents of Utouno community in Ngaski Local Government Area of Kebbi State are gripped by fear following a ₦100 million demand allegedly issued by suspected bandits.

The armed group reportedly sent a letter to community leaders in Kebbi South, warning that failure to pay the ransom would result in a violent attack. In the message, the attackers allegedly referenced a previous deadly assault on Woro community in Kwara State as a sign of what could happen if their demand is ignored.

The threat has triggered panic in Utouno, with some residents already fleeing to safer areas. A local resident, Abbas Alkali, said many families are living in fear.

“Some people have already left, but those of us who have nowhere to go remain praying for our safety,” he said.

Community leader, Malam Ibrahim Bello, has appealed to the government to urgently deploy soldiers to the area to prevent an attack.

The Kebbi State Government confirmed it is aware of the threat and has taken proactive steps. The governor’s spokesperson, Ahmed Idris, said security personnel have been deployed to Utouno, including intensified patrols and air surveillance, to deter any potential assault.

Security sources have linked recent attacks in Kebbi and neighbouring Sokoto State to the Lakurawa group, which has been accused of carrying out killings, abductions, and cattle rustling across parts of the region. Just last week, eight communities in Arewa Local Government Area were reportedly attacked, leaving more than 30 people dead.

Despite heavy losses suffered by armed groups last year during joint security operations, security analysts believe the latest threat may be an attempt to reassert dominance and instill fear among rural communities.

Meanwhile, the police have advised residents, particularly herders, to avoid risky night movements and remain vigilant as security forces intensify operations in the area.

Residents of Utouno remain on high alert amid fears that the attackers could strike at any time.
