Pope Francis has died aged 88, the Vatican announced. He passed away at 7.35am following prolonged health struggles, including pneumonia and kidney complications.
The Argentine-born pontiff, who became Pope in 2013 after Benedict XVI’s resignation, had recently cancelled several public appearances due to ill health. He was hospitalised for 38 days earlier this year and remained under close medical care.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell said Francis “dedicated his life to the service of the Church” and was a true disciple of Jesus, known for his compassion towards the poor and marginalised.
