Catholic faithful on Wednesday gathered at the Holy Cross Cathedral in Lagos to mourn the passing of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, at 88 after suffering from a cerebral stroke and heart failure.

The Catholic archdiocese of Lagos, led by Alfred Martins, the archbishop, organised the special mass to honour the late pope.

The service included prayers, songs, and the opportunity for attendees to sign a condolence register, reflecting the deep respect and admiration for Pope Francis’s legacy.

The archbishop led the procession, underscoring his leadership and reverence for the Pope’s contributions during his 12-year pontificate.

According to Martins, the event was a “tribute to a leader who reshaped the modern Church with his teachings on mercy, environmental care, and inclusivity”.

The archdiocese also declared a nine-day mourning period, from April 21 and to April 29.
