Christians and Muslims Are Being Slaughtered — Pope Leo Speaks on Nigeria’s Crisis

Pope Leo

Pope Leo has expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity in parts of Nigeria, warning that both Christians and Muslims face serious threats from escalating violence.

Speaking on the situation, the Pontiff noted that while concerns for Christian safety in certain regions are valid, the reality is that “Christians and Muslims have been slaughtered.” He described Nigeria’s crisis as a complex mix of terrorism, economic struggles, and conflicts over land control.

“There’s a question of terrorism. There’s a question that has to do a lot with economics, if you will, and control of the lands,” he said, emphasizing that addressing these issues is essential to ensuring “authentic religious freedom.”

Pope Leo urged Nigerian authorities and international partners to intensify efforts to safeguard lives, promote justice, and protect freedom of worship for all communities affected by the violence.
