Civilian Deaths “Painful but Unintended” — Tukur Buratai Reacts to Airstrike

Tukur Buratai

Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has reacted to the controversial airstrike on a market along the Borno–Yobe border, describing the operation as a targeted military action against terrorists.

The airstrike, which hit the Jilli Market, reportedly left dozens of people dead and many others injured, sparking outrage and calls for investigation.

In his reaction, Buratai acknowledged that the loss of innocent lives is “deeply unfortunate and painful,” but maintained that the strike was based on credible intelligence linking the location to Boko Haram and ISWAP activities.

He explained that the market had long been identified as a logistics hub for insurgents, where they reportedly collect levies, procure supplies, and coordinate attacks.

According to him, the military operation was aimed at disrupting terrorist networks, stressing that insurgents often embed themselves within civilian areas, making such operations complex.

Buratai also called for continued public support for the armed forces, urging residents to avoid areas known to be infiltrated by insurgents.

The incident has, however, generated widespread concern, with critics demanding accountability over civilian casualties and urging improved intelligence coordination in military operations.

The Nigerian military has since indicated that an investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the strike.
