A wave of discontent is sweeping through communities in Ondo State as residents and youth groups lament the growing number of abandoned road projects across the state. In particular, the Akotogbo-Ijuosun road construction has come under heavy criticism for its stalled progress and deteriorating state.
The Concerned Akotogbo Youth in a public appeal on Thursday, called on the Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to urgently intervene in what they described as an abandoned and poorly handled project.
According to the group, the much-anticipated road, which was initially approved for full construction, has seen only the first-grade layer laid, with two critical bridges along the route left incomplete. The half-done work has worsened the condition of the road, cutting off access between Akotogbo, Ijuosun, and neighbouring communities, and stifling local economic activities.
“The abandonment of this project has significantly increased the cost of transportation, affected the movement of goods, and made life difficult for our people,” the group stated.
They noted that this case mirrors several other uncompleted or neglected road projects across the state, urging the Aiyedatiwa-led administration to prioritise infrastructural development, particularly in rural and agrarian communities whose livelihoods depend on accessible road networks.
“We passionately call on His Excellency to inspect this project and compel the contractors to return to site,” the youth group appealed. “Your Excellency’s timely intervention would rekindle public confidence and bring much-needed relief to the people of Akotogbo-Ijuosun.”
The call comes amid growing public concern about the state of infrastructure in several parts of Ondo State, with residents urging the government to take decisive action in addressing the challenge of abandoned road projects.
