Controversy as Church Retains ₦750,000 from ₦960,000 Raised for Sick Member

A church community has been thrown into controversy after a fundraising effort for a critically ill member generated far more than the amount initially requested, leading to disagreement over how the surplus should be handled.

According to sources within the congregation, the member was hospitalised and required ₦210,000 for medical bills — a sum his family reportedly could not afford.

During a church service, the pastor announced the need and appealed to members for support. By the end of the service, the congregation had raised ₦960,000 in donations.

After the funds were counted, ₦210,000 was handed over to the sick man’s brother to settle the hospital bill, while the remaining ₦750,000 was deposited into the church’s account.

The decision has since sparked tension. The family of the sick member argued that the entire ₦960,000 was donated out of compassion for their loved one and should have been given to him to support not only the hospital bill but also post-treatment care, medications, and other recovery expenses.

However, the pastor reportedly maintained that his appeal was specifically for ₦210,000 to offset the hospital bill. In his view, once that amount was met, any excess funds belonged to the church, as no additional request had been made.

In your opinion, who is right in this situation now the pastor or the sick man’s famil?
