COVID-19 Lockdown: Ebonyi State Government Ban Okada Give Reasons

The Ebonyi State Government on Sunday said it banned the operation of commercial motorcycle operation (okada) in the state to forestall the outbreak of coronavirus.

It explained that its efforts could be frustrated should okada riders be allowed to continue to ply Ebonyi roads because foreigners were being smuggled into the state through okada.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Francis Nwaze, stated this on Sunday.

Nwaze alleged that okada riders had been transporting foreigners into the state through the bush path at high fees, adding that their medical status was not ascertained.

He said, “The governor values the life of every Ebonyian and will not risk it for an illegal boundary business transaction of the motorcyclists who forget the dangers of a single COVID-19 carrier if smuggled into Ebonyi State.

“All the preventive directives are strictly for the time being and will wane when we are able to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the state.”
