Darlington Okoye, a well-known Nigerian social media personality and content creator, has formally responded to a recent invitation by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) seeking clarification over a controversial video circulated on Instagram.
The letter, dated June 2, 2025, and addressed to the Director General of NAPTIP, Mr. Ngamaraju Titus Mangzha, references a communication sent to Mr. Okoye’s Instagram handle on May 28. In that communication, the agency raised concerns over a video alleged to contain comments that, if substantiated, could be construed as admissions to acts that fall under sexual offences involving minors. These would be considered potential violations under the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, and the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
In his written response, Mr. Okoye expressed deep concern over the interpretation of the video, describing himself as “a law-abiding citizen” who was “raised by martinet parents under the highest ethical and moral standard.” He vehemently denied any involvement in or intent to commit acts of sexual predation or violation, emphasizing that the controversial video was created solely for “entertainment purposes” and had no bearing on real-life events.
“For the sake of clarity,” Okoye wrote, “I reiterate that the said Instagram video was made for purely entertainment purpose only and does not reflect any previous or future event involving my person with any female; minor or major.”
While maintaining his innocence and denying any wrongdoing, Mr. Okoye offered a public apology, stating: “Without conceding to any wrongdoing, may I offer my profound apology for any bad blood or misunderstanding my innocuous actions may have caused the online community.” He characterized the reaction to the video as being “blown out of proportion by persons looking for fault where none exists.”
Mr. Okoye concluded his letter by affirming his willingness to cooperate with authorities, stating that he would present himself at the Agency’s office on June 26, 2025, for any further clarification deemed necessary by NAPTIP.
