“Davido Would Win as Governor, Burna Boy Won’t” — Seyi Sodimu Sparks Online Debate

Veteran Nigerian broadcaster and music executive, Seyi Sodimu, has stirred conversation online after stating that Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy may not have what it takes to win a gubernatorial election, unlike Davido.

Sodimu made the comment during a discussion with actress Shaffy Bello on Korty’s show, where they were debating Nigerian artistes who have reached legendary and globally impactful status like late Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

According to Sodimu, Nigeria’s “Big Three” — Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy — have all attained international recognition, wealth and influence, which he believes qualifies them as legends in their own right. However, he drew a clear distinction when it came to political appeal and mass connection.

“Burna Boy has conquered the stage and he’s good live. Wizkid is special,” Sodimu said. “But Davido surpasses music. If Davido ran for governor today, he would win. One hundred percent. I don’t think Burna Boy could win as a governor.”

He explained that Davido’s influence goes beyond music, pointing to his broad appeal, personal connections and public presence, which he believes translate into political capital. Sodimu likened Burna Boy’s situation to that of late American rapper Tupac Shakur, suggesting that cultural impact does not always equal mass political acceptance.

While Shaffy Bello declined to weigh in on the comparison, she agreed that Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy have already reached legendary status and could achieve even more in the coming years.

Sodimu concluded by praising the artistes for elevating Nigeria’s global image, saying Nigerians “live vicariously through them” and that they have already made the country proud.
