As the nation commemorates Democracy Day, Hon. Sir Azuka Okwuosa (Chinyelugo), a leading aspirant for the Anambra South Senatorial By-Election under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has issued a heartfelt message urging Nigerians to embrace unity and commit to the sustenance of democracy in the country.

In his official statement released on Wednesday, Okwuosa described June 12 as a day of deep historical significance for Nigeria, reflecting the collective will of the people to pursue a truly democratic society.

“Today is June 12, marked in our dear country as Democracy Day. It is a historic day that deserves to be celebrated,” he said. “On that day in 1993, we the people of Nigeria stated our unreserved preference for true democracy.”

Reflecting on the historic presidential election of 1993, Okwuosa noted that the nation, though under military rule at the time, embraced a transparent electoral process that transcended ethnic, religious, and regional divides. He hailed the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, widely regarded as the winner of the annulled election, as a symbol of national unity and democratic hope.

“Our collective choice of late Chief M.K.O. Abiola as a worthy leader for the nation was saluted by Nigerians and by governments and peoples across the world,” he added.

The APC chieftain emphasized that June 12 remains a cornerstone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, symbolizing the people’s quest for a system built on inclusion, equal treatment, and participation. He described democracy as “a fundamental building block for peace, sustainable development, and human rights.”

Okwuosa called on citizens to reflect on the values of democracy and actively contribute to its preservation. “As we celebrate Nigeria’s Democracy Day, I urge all Nigerians to rise to the challenge of contributing to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria,” he stated.

He further stressed the importance of national unity, urging Nigerians to leverage their diversity as a source of strength to build a just and equal society. According to him, a truly democratic Nigeria will only be realized when the collective strength and will of the people become the foundation for national development.

In his closing remarks, Hon. Okwuosa congratulated Nigerians on the commemoration of the historic day and expressed optimism about the future.

“I am optimistic that the future is pregnant with great benefits for us as Nigerians, and all we need to do is to prepare ourselves to tap into the opportunities that lie ahead,” he concluded.

The statement was released through the Azuka Okwuosa Media Team.
