As Nigerians across the country mark the 2025 Democracy Day, former Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has called on citizens to renew their commitment to peace, love, and national unity as the cornerstone for sustainable development and democratic progress.
In a heartfelt message to the nation, Ugwuanyi urged Nigerians to reflect on the significance of democracy and the sacrifices made by the nation’s heroes who fought for civilian rule. He emphasized that democracy thrives not only through the conduct of elections but also through the active participation of citizens in building a peaceful and inclusive society.
“Today, as we celebrate another milestone in our democratic journey, we must remember that democracy is more than the ballot box. It is about the values we uphold — peace, tolerance, unity, and shared responsibility for the progress of our nation,” Ugwuanyi stated.
He praised the resilience of Nigerians in the face of current socio-economic challenges and called on political leaders, stakeholders, and the youth to put the interest of the nation above all else. According to him, the spirit of unity is more important now than ever, as the country navigates economic, security, and social hurdles.
“Our diversity should be our strength, not a source of division,” Ugwuanyi said. “When we come together with love and mutual respect, we can overcome every obstacle and achieve the Nigeria of our dreams. The future belongs to all of us, and it must be built with unity of purpose.”
Ugwuanyi, who served as governor of Enugu State from 2015 to 2023 and is widely respected for his calm and inclusive leadership style, also appealed to Nigerians to shun hate speech, political bitterness, and ethnic sentiments. He emphasized that no meaningful progress can be achieved without peace and a genuine commitment to national development.
Reflecting on his time in office, Ugwuanyi noted that his administration made conscious efforts to promote peace and security as the foundation of development in Enugu State. He urged current and future leaders at all levels to make governance people-centered, inclusive, and focused on long-term growth.
“Democracy is about service to the people. Our leaders must always put the needs of the masses first, ensuring that every Nigerian feels a sense of belonging and participation in national affairs,” he said.
Ugwuanyi also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sustaining democratic governance and urged the federal government to do more in tackling insecurity, inflation, and youth unemployment — key issues that he said threaten the stability of the nation.
He concluded his message by encouraging Nigerians, especially the youth, not to lose hope in the country. He stressed the importance of civic engagement, peaceful coexistence, and community-driven development.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember that nation building is a collective duty. It starts with me, with you, and with every Nigerian who believes in the promise of a better tomorrow. Let us build bridges, not walls,” Ugwuanyi said.
Democracy Day in Nigeria, observed annually on June 12, commemorates the historic 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the country’s history. It serves as a reminder of the struggle for democratic rule and the importance of safeguarding the freedoms and rights of all Nigerians.
As the country moves forward, voices like Ugwuanyi’s continue to resonate, reminding the nation of the importance of unity, peace, and shared values in securing a truly democratic and prosperous Nigeria.
