Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba has expressed strong concern over a controversial ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board that reportedly overturned the result of the recent Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal national football team and Morocco national football team.
In a statement addressing African football stakeholders, Drogba said he was speaking with a “heavy heart” following the decision, which he noted had reversed a victory originally secured on the pitch months earlier.
The former Ivory Coast national football team captain recalled how Senegal’s triumph had been widely celebrated across the continent after the final, describing it as a moment of pride and unity for African football fans from Dakar to Nairobi.
According to him, the appeal board’s decision to overturn the outcome long after the final whistle has raised concerns about the credibility and image of African football.
“This is not just about one trophy,” Drogba said, stressing that such decisions could create doubt and confusion while undermining confidence in the governance of the sport on the continent.
He acknowledged that rules and discipline are necessary in football administration but warned that delayed rulings risk damaging the reputation of African competitions globally.
Drogba also cautioned that critics often use controversies like this to question the organisation and quality of the Africa Cup of Nations, despite the competition’s long history and the global success of African players.
Highlighting the continent’s football legacy, he pointed to renowned African stars such as Samuel Eto’o, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Riyad Mahrez as examples of the talent and influence Africa has produced on the global stage.
The football icon called for stronger leadership within CAF to ensure transparency, trust and stability in African football governance.
He added that if the matter requires further legal review, it could be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but stressed that beyond the current dispute, African football authorities must reflect on the long-term future of the sport.
Drogba concluded by urging unity among stakeholders, saying African football deserves respect and strong institutional foundations to protect the passion and sacrifices of players and fans across the continent.
