The Ebonyi state government has inaugurated the management committee of its newly-floated football club, the Salt City FC of Abakaliki.
The state Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Charlse Akpuenika who represented Governor David Umahi at the occasion, urged the committee to secure promotion for the club from the national league cadre it will compete-in.
Akpuenika said that the day was special in the annals of sports in the state as it fulfilled the governor’s pledge to float a new football team for the state.
“The governor promised to return national soccer action to the state after the disbandment of the erstwhile state teams: Ebonyi Angels and Eboni Queens football clubs by the previous administration in 2007.
“He reiterated the pledge during the last #END SARS youth summit in January and we are happy that this dream has come to fruition,”.
The commissioner urged the committee to commence immediate scouting of talented players to ensure that the state presents a formidable team for the next national league season in the country.
“You should use the forthcoming King David champions cup to scout for these talents as only the best can help us achieve the promotion goal.
“The competition will be competed by the 64 Local Government Areas Development Centres in the state with each senatorial zone producing six teams.
“The 18 qualifiers would compete in the state finals to produce the overall champion,”.
He charged the committee to be dedicated towards the assignment and pledged the governor’s support to enable it to succeed.
Mr Martin Odionye, the team manager of the club thanked the state government for reposing confidence in the committee and pledged to deliver on its mandate.
“The committee is an assemblage of football egg-heads in the state and is poised to make the state proud,. ENDS
