The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned in strong terms the terrorist attack that occurred on April 17, 2025, in the Republic of Benin, which resulted in the loss of lives and left several people injured.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the ECOWAS Commission expressed deep shock and indignation over the attack, describing it as a heinous and cowardly act aimed at spreading terror and destabilizing member states of the regional bloc.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Government and people of Benin. He also wished the injured a speedy and full recovery.

“The ECOWAS Commission reiterates its unwavering support and full solidarity with His Excellency the President of the Republic of Benin, the Government, and the people of Benin during this difficult time,” the statement said.

Dr. Touray reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to stand by the Beninese authorities in their determined efforts to combat terrorism and ensure the safety of citizens and the security of their territory.

The Commission stressed that the persistence and complexity of the terrorist threat in the region underscores the urgent need for enhanced cooperation among ECOWAS member states, particularly those with shared borders and direct exposure to the scourge of terrorism.

It called for the pooling of security efforts across the region as an essential step toward delivering a collective and effective response to terrorist groups undermining peace, stability, and development in West Africa.

“ECOWAS remains firmly committed to the implementation of its regional counter-terrorism strategy, including the operationalization of its standby force,” the statement said, urging international partners to support regional and national efforts to eliminate terrorism in West Africa.
