Tragedy struck over the weekend in Enugu town when a young man was brutally shot and killed by suspected gunmen around the Otigba axis of New Haven.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim was trailed by armed men who allegedly attempted to kidnap him. When the abduction failed, the attackers opened fire, shooting him multiple times before fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred just a few meters away from a police checkpoint, with the New Haven Police Station also located nearby. Eyewitnesses claimed that police officers attached to the checkpoint reportedly fled on hearing the gunshots, leaving residents shocked and angered.
“This road is one of the busiest areas in Enugu metropolis. If such an attack can happen here, then nowhere is safe,” one resident lamented.
The brazen killing has sparked concerns about security lapses in the state, particularly as the government recently announced the installation of CCTV cameras across Enugu metropolis to curb crime.
Residents are now questioning whether the surveillance system is functional and calling on authorities to ensure the perpetrators are tracked down and brought to justice.
While commending the state government for its ongoing efforts to beautify and modernize Enugu, locals insist that greater attention must be paid to public safety and the protection of lives.
