
Tragedy struck along the Calabar–Ikom Highway in Cross River State as a fatal road accident claimed the lives of four people and left several others injured.
The crash occurred at Mkpani area in Yakurr Local Government Area on Thursday afternoon, involving a commercial passenger vehicle and a cement truck.
Emergency officials confirmed that three victims died instantly at the scene, while another later died at the hospital, bringing the death toll to four.
Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to General Hospital, Ugep, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Authorities say the accident may have been caused by over-speeding and loss of control, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other agencies, were quickly deployed to the scene to carry out rescue operations and clear the wreckage.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety on the busy highway, which is a major route connecting communities in the state.
