The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Uche Ekwunife has restated the need for government to prioritise roads construction and infrastructural development. She said that the deplorable state of roads in Nigeria calls for grave concern.
Ekwunife said this at the Senate plenary on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 while contributing to a motion moved by the Senator representing Cross River North, Senator Stephen Odey.
Addressing the Senate, the outspoken and quintessential federal lawmaker stated that the deplorable state of federal roads in the country has continued to increase inter-state travel hours.
“From Enugu to Awka which should ordinarily be about 40 mins takes about 3 hours because of the poor state of the road. From Lokoja to Enugu takes about 5 hours instead of 1 hr. 30mins.”, she said.
Ekwunife who few days ago commissioned one of the over twenty ongoing road projects she attracted to her senatorial district, equally lamented the state of the Onitsha-Owerri-Port Harcourt expressway, emphasizing the increase in the travel time from Owerri to Port Harcourt just because of the poor state of the road. She said that with the heavy part of the rainy season ahead of us, most of our roads will become even more impassable.
Senator Ekwunife appealed to her colleagues in the national and state assemblies to, while discharging their constitutional responsibilities of appropriation, make special and adequate provisions for roads construction, and follow up to ensure that the monies are released and used judiciously. She said that establishing good road networks is the only way to drive development across the country.
