A group of self-described political operatives, led by Comrade Aryan Abdul Kareem, has publicly confessed to participating in what they claim was a coordinated misinformation campaign targeted at former Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle.

Speaking at a press briefing on behalf of Comrade Olumu Lucky, Comrade Olukayode Williams, Comrade John Osumbor Mark, and Engineer Bashir Muhammad, Kareem said the group was “sponsored and guided” by individuals allegedly connected to the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal Dare.

According to Kareem, the alleged sponsorship was delivered through Governor Lawal’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, who he claims convened and supervised a series of meetings where participants were “briefed, instructed and resourced.” He further alleged that over ₦500 million was allocated for the campaign, purportedly used to mobilize media figures, political commentators, social media influencers, and known public personalities, including Kabiru Marafa and Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi.

Kareem stated that the group knowingly circulated false materials and damaging narratives against the former governor. “We participated in the circulation of damaging content even when we knew it did not reflect the truth,” he said, adding that the decision was driven by “political pressure and financial inducement.”

He tendered an “unreserved apology” to Matawalle, his family, and members of the public who may have been misled by the alleged misinformation. The group also expressed willingness to cooperate with any investigation that authorities may initiate, insisting they possess “clear evidence” of their role, including records of meetings purportedly held with the governor’s spokesperson.

“We are ready to face any consequences that may arise from these revelations,” Kareem said, urging others who may have been involved in similar activities to “find the courage to speak the truth,” and emphasizing the need for honesty in political communication.

As of the time of this report, officials associated with Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration had not responded to the allegations made at the briefing.

The statement was signed by Comrade Aryan Abdul Kareem on behalf of the group.
