The groups, Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) and the Nigerian Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) have formally written to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). They request the agency to forbid smoking in the Big Brother Naija (BBN) Season 6 which would commence soon. The reality show would commence on 18 July, 2021.
NTCA and CAPPA in their letter captioned, Big Brother Naija Season 6: NBC Should make it illegal to Smoking in the Entertainment industry. He addressed the letter to Mr. Babalola Shehu Ilelah, Director General of the NBC. He commended the body for the ban on nudity on the reality TV show but also wants it to extend to the area of smoking which is wide spread on the TV show.
Mr. Philip Jakpor, a spokesman of CAPPA, said this on Friday in Abuja that the influence of smoking in the BBN has bad impression on the youths of Nigeria. Especially now that the government is tirelessly making frantic efforts to reduce smoking in the life of the youths.
According to Mr Philip, it is worse now that Nigeria is battling with the deadly pandemic COVID -19 because it has been said that smokers have better chances of getting complications or even die if they get infected by the virus.
The letter was jointly assented by Akinbode Oluwafemi, CAPPA Executive Director, and Chibuike Nwokorie, NTCA Programme Manager, the groups drew the attention of the national Broadcasting Commission to the National Tobacco Control Act 2015 and the National Tobacco Control Regulations 2019 that enlists specific contents which makes it illegal for Tobacco promotion, Advertising, and Sponsorship (TAPS).
They groups however admonished NBC to put into consideration the NTC-Act 2015 and NTC Regulations 2019 and totally ban the use of cigarette in the Big Brother Naija (BBN) show Season 6.
