Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu has raised fresh allegations of extortion and abuse of office as he confirmed that a long-standing case involving the alleged abduction of NYSC members has been reopened.
In a statement shared on his social media page, Gwamnishu claimed that a sum of ₦10 million was returned to him by a former Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 16, Bayelsa, alongside officers of the Surveillance Department.
He further alleged that since 5 November 2024, the outcome of the police trial had remained unclear, adding that he was detained in Benin during which time the former AIG allegedly made efforts to ensure he remained in custody.
According to him, he was eventually granted bail by the court despite what he described as attempts to suppress his release.
“₦10,000,000 was returned to me by the former AIG, Zone 16 Bayelsa, along with his Surveillance Department. From 5th November 2024 till date, the outcome of the police trial remains unknown,” he wrote.
Gwamnishu also confirmed that the case, which involves allegations bordering on the abduction of NYSC members and the alleged extortion of ₦10 million from him and his family, has now been reopened.
“This case has now been reopened. I will not be silenced,” he added.
The renewed development has sparked public attention, with calls for a transparent investigation into the allegations and the handling of the initial proceedings.
