Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he feels “perfectly safe” in Nigeria, dismissing negative reports about the country’s security situation ahead of his visit.
Johnson made the remark on Thursday during the Imo State Economic Summit 2025 held in Owerri, the state capital.
“When I decided to come to Owerri, I read some things, and there were people saying, ‘There may be some security problems in Nigeria.’ Have you heard that?” Johnson said. “And I said, ‘Well, I am going to go anyway.’”
Addressing participants at the summit, he added:
“Do you feel safe here today in this conference? Yes, we all feel safe. And I feel perfectly safe. Thank you, Governor, for what you are doing.”
Johnson also commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for his push to provide 24-hour electricity across Imo State, describing the initiative as critical to economic transformation.
He noted that artificial intelligence would play a major role in helping the state achieve its developmental vision, stressing that AI remains “the future.”
