A Nigerian soldier popularly known as “Soja Boy” has sparked reactions on social media after opening up about the challenges he faced while serving in the military, particularly his salary and working conditions.
In a statement circulating online, the soldier revealed that his last monthly salary while in service was N109,000, noting that it was previously N51,000 before it was increased last year.
According to him, despite the modest pay, soldiers are often required to purchase essential gear with their personal funds. He explained that a military uniform costs about N55,000, while combat boots cost around N60,000, adding that items such as helmets and bulletproof vests are also sometimes bought by soldiers themselves.
The soldier also recounted his lengthy deployment in the North-East, stating that he spent four years and nine months in Maiduguri, even though he was initially told the posting would last only two years.
He further shared the emotional toll of the conflict, revealing that he lost a close friend during the deployment, a statement that has drawn sympathy and concern from many Nigerians online.
His comments surfaced during an online conversation referencing activist and politician Omoyele Sowore, sparking debates about the welfare of Nigerian soldiers and the sacrifices they make while serving in conflict zones.
The revelations have since triggered discussions across social media platforms, with many Nigerians calling for improved welfare, better equipment provision, and stronger support systems for members of the Nigerian Army engaged in security operations across the country.
