Popular Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Ibrahim Chatta, has set the record straight following KC Jagaban’s claim that the late Murphy Afolabi was the one who brought him into the limelight as a movie director.
In a clarification, Chatta explained that his first encounter with Murphy Afolabi came through Kamilukompo, who introduced Murphy to him when he needed someone knowledgeable about Ifa for a role. According to him, that was his very first meeting with Afolabi.
He further revealed that it was LALA, a renowned movie producer during their early years, who gave him his first major break with the movie Omo Bashorun. The film, which featured Funke Akindele, LALA, and Lalude in lead roles, marked the turning point of his directing career.
Chatta recounted that afterwards, LALA, Murphy Afolabi, and Saheed Osupa came on set during one of his directorial works. Murphy Afolabi later gave him his first directing job with the movie Awure Eni, while he also directed Saheed Osupa’s Agbere Oju. He went on to direct Aseda Orun for Afolabi, but disclosed that it was during the production of that film he had a conflict with the late actor.
Out of respect for the deceased, Chatta maintained that he would not disclose the reason behind their fallout, stating that since Murphy has passed on, there is no point revisiting old conflicts.
He also stressed that Murphy Afolabi was already a household name in the industry before KC Jagaban joined acting, adding that Jagaban was not in the right position to narrate his story.
Chatta concluded by noting that his success as a director came through his own journey and the opportunities provided by LALA, and not as KC Jagaban had claimed.
