
Award-winning Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Tiwa Savage, has voiced her frustration over what she describes as a lack of recognition for her immense contributions to the Nigerian and African music industry.
In a candid interview on the Off Air Show, the globally celebrated star said she often feels overlooked despite her groundbreaking achievements as one of Africa’s most successful female artists. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
“I don’t get enough credit for what I’ve done,” Tiwa said. “Sometimes I feel like people don’t fully appreciate my journey or how much I’ve helped shape the Afrobeats movement.”

When asked if she feels she has received her flowers from fans and colleagues, Tiwa didn’t hold back.
Her response was direct:
“No. I’m sorry, I don’t.”
The ‘Somebody’s Son’ crooner explained that although she is proud of her milestones — including international awards, hit singles, and sold-out concerts across the world — she believes female artists in Nigeria are often underappreciated compared to their male counterparts.
Tiwa Savage Highlights Gender Bias in the Music Industry
Tiwa Savage noted that the entertainment industry sometimes fails to give women the same level of respect, visibility, and acknowledgment as male artists.
“There’s always comparison and criticism,” she said. “Instead of celebrating women’s wins, people focus on what we’re not doing right. It can be frustrating.”
Despite the bias, Tiwa emphasized that she remains focused on her craft and continues to push boundaries for women in Afrobeats.
Tiwa Praises Ayra Starr, Tems, and Diamond Platnumz
Even while expressing her disappointment, Tiwa showed grace and humility by commending other African stars making global impact.
She gave special mention to fellow Nigerian singers Ayra Starr and Tems, as well as Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz, acknowledging their hard work and how they are “helping to shape the sound and visibility of African music.”
“I love seeing other African artists win,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see how far we’ve come as a continent.”
Looking Ahead: Tiwa’s Message to the Next Generation
Tiwa Savage concluded by sharing a message of hope and empowerment for upcoming female artists. She expressed her wish that the next generation of women in music will be celebrated fully for their impact without having to fight for validation.
“My hope is that the next generation of female artists won’t have to struggle the way we did to be seen or respected,” she said. “They deserve to be celebrated, not compared.”
