Kano Emirate Dispute Nears Resolution, State Govt Says

Kano Emirate Dispute

Barely five days after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Kano State Government has signalled an imminent resolution of the prolonged emirship crisis in the state.

The dispute, which has lingered for nearly two years, followed the removal of the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, and the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II by the state government, creating parallel claims to the Kano Emirate.

The State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, disclosed on Thursday in Kano that the government has initiated political and reconciliation-driven modalities aimed at resolving the crisis and ensuring the emergence of one substantive Emir.

“The Kano State Government assures you that very soon, the emirate dispute will be resolved,” Waiya said. “We are now one, and the government is committed to dialogue with all stakeholders to bring lasting peace to the Kano Emirate.”

He explained that the resolution process could involve voluntary withdrawal by some claimants or reconciliation efforts resulting from mutual understanding among parties involved.

“It is possible that some will step down from the throne on their own, or others will seek reconciliation because a mutual understanding has been reached,” the commissioner added.

Also speaking on the matter, the Political Adviser to Governor Yusuf, Alhaji Mustapha Bakwana, said resolving the emirship tussle is critical to Kano’s political stability and growth.

Bakwana, during a local radio programme, stated that the government is determined to unify the Kano Emirate under a single leadership to end the ongoing controversy.

He noted that the prolonged dispute has continued to generate tension and distraction, stressing that a united emirate structure would foster harmony and development in the state.

Meanwhile, sources within government circles revealed that part of the political understanding reached between former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Governor Yusuf includes the discontinuation of claims surrounding both the 15th Emir backed by Ganduje and the 16th Emir appointed by the Yusuf administration.

The sources said the agreement is aimed at clearing the path for a consensual and widely acceptable solution to the emirate crisis.
