Kidnapped Anambra Politician Released After ₦16m Ransom, Brother Killed

Hon. Ernest Okafor

The family of Hon. Ernest Okafor has confirmed his release after spending several days in captivity. Reliable sources disclosed that his freedom was secured following the payment of a ₦16 million ransom to his abductors.

Hon. Ernest Engr. Obinna Okafor, father of Engr. Obinna Okafor, was kidnapped on August 16, 2025, in front of his residence at Awa, Orumba Local Government Area of Anambra State. His abduction sparked widespread fear and heightened concerns over rising insecurity in the region.

While his release brought some relief to the family, the development was overshadowed by tragedy. His brother, Chief Okwuchukwu Okafor, popularly known as Ejiamatu, did not survive the ordeal.

Until his death, Ejiamatu served as the Chairman of Market 3, Eke Awka, and head of the Eke Awka Task Force. His passing has thrown the Awka business community into mourning, as traders and colleagues remember him as a committed leader.
