The Lagos State House of Assembly has invited top officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to appear before the House for a detailed briefing regarding preparations for the upcoming Local Government election scheduled for July.

This decision followed a motion raised under Matter of Urgent Public Importanceby the Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions, and LASIEC, Hon. Oladipo Ajomale.

Ajomale expressed concern over the Commission’s recently released election guidelines, which he described as vague and lacking in essential details necessary for public awareness and legislative scrutiny.

He urged the House to engage LASIEC for clarifications to ensure transparency and build public confidence in the electoral process.

Supporting the motion, Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, emphasized the importance of the Assembly being fully briefed on the Commission’s plans. He backed the call for LASIEC officials to appear before the House to provide a proper account of their preparations.

Also contributing, Hon. Bonu Solomon highlighted the inadequate public enlightenment efforts by LASIEC, warning that poor communication could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

Other lawmakers echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for clarity on key aspects of the upcoming polls, including security arrangements, the engagement of ad-hoc staff, and voter education strategies.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who presided over the plenary, affirmed the need for a comprehensive briefing from LASIEC to guarantee a free, fair, and credible election. He subsequently directed the House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions, and LASIEC to invite the Commission’s key officials and report back promptly.

In a separate development, the House adopted the recommendations of its Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, following the presentation of a report on a petition titled “Request for Review of Unlawful Appointment and Disregard for a Valid Law of the Lagos State House of Assembly.”
