Activist and convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to proceed with the investigation and possible prosecution of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, dismissing Malami’s claims of political persecution as “unfortunate.”
In a statement on Tuesday, Adeyanju described Malami’s allegation that the EFCC is acting out of political vendetta as an attempt to evade accountability, insisting that the anti-graft agency has both the mandate and responsibility to investigate the former minister.
Adeyanju urged the EFCC to focus particularly on Malami’s tenure in office, including all matters relating to the handling of recovered Abacha loot.
“Public office is a trust, and all past and present public officials must be ready to give a full account of how that trust was exercised,” Adeyanju said.
He recalled that Malami, while in government, wielded state power aggressively and presided over the prosecution of several individuals, including members of the opposition.
“Having subjected others to investigation and prosecution, he cannot now seek to exempt himself from the same process,” Adeyanju added.
The activist maintained that no individual should be above the law, stressing that allegations of corruption must be thoroughly investigated regardless of status or political affiliation.
