
Tragedy struck in Awka as a yet-to-be-identified man lost his life after allegedly attempting to vandalise electricity equipment belonging to FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Ogechukwu Street, where the suspect was reportedly cutting cables at a transformer substation before a heavy explosion led to his electrocution. His lifeless body was later discovered at the scene.
According to FirstPower’s Head of Communications, Izunna Okafor, the matter has been reported to the Anambra State Police Command, who have evacuated the corpse and launched investigations.
The company’s Managing Director, Okechukwu Okafor, condemned vandalism and energy theft, stressing that beyond disrupting electricity supply, such acts pose grave danger to lives. Residents have been urged to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities around power installations.
