Manual Result Clause in New Electoral Bill Puts NYSC Members at Risk – Mike Igini Warns

Mike Igini

A former INEC Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, has kicked against the recently passed Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026.The bill which was passed by the National Assembly on Tuesday, February 17.

The bill allows for the electronic transmission of results but with a clause that says that election results can be manually tabulated where network failure is noticed in a polling unit.

In a chat with Arise TV this morning February 18, Igini pointed out that the danger of passing the bill with the clause for manual tabulation of results is that the lives of election presiding officers, who are mostly youth corpers, will be put at risk. He said crisis can erupt in the event where electorates can see that there is network on their phones but the presiding officer chooses to manually tabulate results on the basis that he or she has no network.
