A festive atmosphere turned tragic on Sunday when a masquerade was fatally struck by a tricycle (commonly known as a Keke) during the annual Imo Awka Festival.

The incident occurred along Arthur Eze Avenue, near Choice Hotel, around midday. Eyewitnesses reported that the area was bustling with festivalgoers when the Keke suddenly lost control and collided with the masquerade, who was participating in the traditional procession.

Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after, but the victim was declared dead before reaching the hospital. The identity of the masquerade and the tricycle driver have not yet been made public.

Local authorities have not released an official statement, but sources confirm that an investigation into the incident is underway.

The Imo Awka Festival, a centuries-old cultural celebration in the capital of Anambra State, draws large crowds every year. Sunday’s accident has cast a shadow over this year’s events, with many expressing shock and grief over the unfortunate loss.
