A newborn baby has been found abandoned with a handwritten note at a shop in Umuodu village, Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The baby was discovered inside a tote bag by a nurse, Mrs. Mercy Iloanya, on Sunday, February 1, 2026, when she arrived at her shop along Pope John Paul Seminary School Street.

According to Iloanya, she immediately drew the attention of a man nearby, who confirmed that the baby was alive. They then alerted the shop owner, Mrs. Chika Onyema.

Speaking to Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Onyema said that when the bag was opened, a written note was found in which the mother appealed for help in caring for the child.

Luckily, good Samaritans who gathered at the scene were kind enough to contributed baby items.

ABS officials later took the baby to the Anambra Police B Division, where an official report was made.
The child was subsequently transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Mother and Child Department at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, on the directive of the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare.

Authorities are yet to make a statement on the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.
