Once United, Now Divergent: Where Are the G5 Governors Today?

G5 Governors

Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Samuel Ortom of Benue, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia once stood as a formidable bloc within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the party leadership in the lead-up to the 2023 elections.

At the height of their influence, the group was seen as a strong, united force capable of shaping PDP’s direction and influencing key political decisions. However, their cohesion has gradually weakened over time, and today, the G5 no longer functions as a unified front.

While some members maintain strategic political alliances within the party, others have chosen to chart independent paths, and a few have even become political adversaries. Analysts say the once-solid alliance now exists more in name than in practice, with each governor operating largely as an individual political player.

The evolution of the G5 underscores the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where alliances can shift rapidly, and yesterday’s allies may become today’s competitors.
