In a landmark development set to reshape the socio-economic landscape of Ondo State, the Ondo State Farmers’ Congress on Tuesday laid the foundation for a ₦10 billion Mixed-Use Housing Project in Akure, the state capital.
The ambitious project, championed by the current leadership of the Congress under Farmer (Dr.) Monilari Abayomi, marks a new era of collaboration between government, private investors, and the farming community. Designed as a catalyst for rural-urban integration, the initiative is poised to significantly boost access to affordable housing, stimulate local commerce, and promote agricultural prosperity.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr. Abayomi lauded Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his administration’s unwavering support for agriculture and rural development, noting that farmers in the state are no longer perceived as mere food producers but as critical stakeholders in the overall development strategy.
“This event transcends bricks and mortar; it lays the foundation for a progressive future. This Mixed-Use Housing Project symbolises what is achievable when government, private sector, and the people unite for a common purpose,” Dr. Abayomi stated.
He emphasised that the project aligns with the state’s developmental blueprint — the O’DATIWA O’DIRORUN policy, a seven-pillar strategy aimed at expanding opportunities, empowering citizens, and fast-tracking infrastructural growth.
Unveiling the features of the project, Dr. Abayomi listed residential apartments for affordable, quality living, commercial spaces to foster trade and job creation, a dedicated Farmers’ Market complex to showcase local produce, and recreational facilities to enhance community wellbeing.
While commending the state government’s strides in rural development, Dr. Abayomi seized the occasion to appeal for the swift resolution of the long-standing Cocoa Development Fund (CDF) matter, which he said would unlock new economic opportunities for farmers across Ondo State.
Representing the Governor at the event, the Senior Special Assistant on Agriculture and Agribusiness, Hon. Wemimo Akinsola, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and effective deployment of resources.
He urged farmers to ensure proper documentation of their farmlands and coordinates, noting that several agriculture-focused initiatives are in the pipeline for the year.
“As we are in the planting season, it is important for our farmers to embrace the available opportunities. This is an era of accountability — there’s no longer room for waste,” Hon. Akinsola remarked.
Also present at the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. (Mrs.) Seun Osamaye, praised Governor Aiyedatiwa’s inclusive and participatory governance style. She pledged the ministry’s unwavering support for the housing project and other farmer-focused programmes.
Providing technical insight into the project, Architect Ayo Oladunmiye described the housing development as a forward-thinking venture that integrates residential and commercial needs with energy-efficient and environmentally friendly designs.
“This project represents the intersection of innovation and sustainable living. It’s a dynamic blend of homes, businesses, and community life,” Oladunmiye noted.
The historic ceremony attracted dignitaries from various sectors, traditional rulers, farmers’ cooperatives, and members of the public, all of whom hailed the initiative as a bold step toward inclusive and sustainable development in Ondo State.
In a goodwill message, the National President of the Farmers’ Congress, represented by the South West Chairman, Farmer Adewumi Abass Adekunle, extended heartfelt congratulations to stakeholders, industry partners, and resilient farmers whose steadfastness continues to nourish the nation.
He further acknowledged the state government’s leadership and foresight in supporting ventures that benefit the broader community.
With this development, Ondo State takes a significant stride toward a more integrated, inclusive, and sustainable future — placing farmers at the heart of its growth agenda.
