Onitsha Economic Cluster and the Challenges of Now By Chris Emeka Azubogu

Onitsha Cluster which is made up of about seven LGA’s of (Onitsha South, Onitsha North, Ogbaru, Idemili North, Idemili South, Oyi and Anambra East) is the busiest Urban Cluster in Anambra State.

The Cluster is not only housing Commercial activities, but also Manufacturing and huge Residential area.

In this 21 Century, we have to consider our past and current efforts as a State towards this cluster and re-engineer an Onitsha Cluster that will meet the modern standard where people will not only come to trade, but will also reside.

White people e.g. (Americans & Europeans) used to reside in Onitsha; what went wrong?Properties in Onitsha GRA used to compete with that of Ikoyi in terms of value, but not any more! While Infrastructure around Ikoyi has advanced and added value to people living around there for example, Infrastructure within our GRA has not moved with the same speed with that of Ikoyi.

What should we do?
We have to map out Public Policy strategy that will make Onitsha Cluster to regain and retain her leadership in Commercial activities which it’s losing to our competitors.

A market that does not adjust to speed and other needs of its customers in this 21st century, will have them (customers) move to it’s competitors.

The Manufacturing part of the cluster is another area we have to consider so important if we must retain our economic strength.

In all, our people have beared the burden of sustaining this our Cluster from collapse, with little effort from Public Policy angle.

Our Government have tried their best, but we have to strive to provide Infrastructure, Policies and Legislations that will put this great cluster that houses every communities not only in Anambra, but Igbo land and beyond to height of greatness.

Onitsha bears the story of our greatness as a people and we have to do everything to preserve it and put it on a global map of functional city with attributes of modernity.

This cluster should not only serve as a revenue (IGR) yielding platform, it also need to be taken care of.

My thought on Onitsha Cluster is one of hope…

Come with me, let’s build a society that will solve her problems.
