OSSY EMMA OJUKWU CANNOT DIE IN VAIN- King of Six Nations Mourns former Nigerian leader in China

The news about the death of my friend and president, African Communities in China, Sir Ossy Emma Ojukwu came to me as a rude shock. I have not met Ossy in person but the way he related to me, people would think we have known for decades. He was the President General of Ikenga Ndi Igbo Worldwide and seeing my leadership qualities, he nominated me as the patron of the association. Ikenga Ndi Igbo was thought out to help promote the cause of Ndi Igbo across the world. Through the association, we have empowered families and assisted our brothers who have encountered one problem or the other in their countries of sojourn. Ossy was dependable and believed so much in me. He projected me so much and more importantly, everything that has to deal with Ndi Igbo. And because of this, he earned our deepest respect till death. He was a leader par excellence and below are some of the leadership lessons people can learn from him:

HE WAS PREPARED FOR LEADERSHIP: Immediately he was elected the leader of Nigerian Community in China, he understood the essence of capacity building in order to discharge his responsibilities as a leader efficiently and effectively. And so he studied the Chinese Law. His knowledge of the Chinese Law widened his horizon on the dos and don’ts of the Chinese society. He was able to educate our people on the saliency of obeying those laws, he defended their rights when necessary and offered assistance to them whenever they had issues with the authorities and he intervened within the ambit of the Chinese laws. It took him complete two years to achieve this feat. He also understood the importance of diplomacy, and for that, he was able to maintain a harmonious relationship with the Chinese authorities and they had tremendous respect for him. I have lived in a foreign country for almost two decades. I understand how difficult it is to earn the respect and recognition of the authorities of your host country. That is why it is mind blowing to us to know that Ossy is well respected in China. He was able to demolish the wall of distrust and scorn and built a bridge of mutual respect between our people and the Chinese authorities using his office.

HE WAS HONEST: Honesty is a very costly virtue lacking in the African leadership terrain. Ossy was of a different breed. He stood by his words even if the heavens totter and the earth reels. He was not given to frivolous promises and his words were his bond. He said things as they were and stood by his words. Never in his presidency was he accused of misappropriation or using his office to feather his own financial nest

HE NEVER GAVE UP ON ANYBODY: It was Napoleon Bonaparte who said that a leader is a dealer in hope. With Ossy, nobody is irredeemable. He had an infinite hope in the capacity of every human to reach out to the better angels of our nature and change, regardless of how messy their past may have been. Ossy believed in people’s capacity for redemption and the power of second chance. Our people do say that only fruit bearing trees are thrown stones. Even though he faced many battles as a leader, he never wrote off his traducers. He was always ready to welcome them with an open hand whenever they realize the futility of their efforts and turn back from their ways.

HE WAS SELFLESS: Ossy was utterly selfless, emptying his life for the public good. For him, there comes a time in the life of a man when he forgets self and hitches himself to a wagon larger than his, a higher cause that bothers on collective advancement. Ossy was in a position that enabled him to indulge in primitive accumulation of wealth but he shunned such opportunities, taking them as criminal breach of trust. The only riches he enjoyed were his goodwill. He empowered people, guaranteeing their business relationships with the Chinese, but never bothered to benefit from it. He was satisfied with planting trees he may never enjoy their shades.

HE MADE GREAT IMPACT: Ossy was instrumental to the formation of so many groups in China, namely Nigerian China Family, Nigeria Chinese Window of Commerce, African Community in China, Ikenga Ndi Igbo, Oga niru ndi Igbo. These groups were initiated to promote the good cause of our people across the world.

Let us work together for the immortalization of this great man and his legacies. We are a people in dire need of heroes and role models.

Rest in peace and far thee well, leader!!!
