Outrage as NSA Nuhu Ribadu Travels to U.S. Amid Rising Insecurity in Nigeria

Amid escalating security challenges across several parts of the country, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has reportedly travelled to the United States, sparking widespread criticism and concern among Nigerians.

The development has triggered public debates over the federal government’s commitment to addressing insecurity, with many citizens questioning the timing of the trip. Critics argue that key security leaders should remain in the country to coordinate responses to the recent surge in attacks, kidnappings, and communal violence.

Some Nigerians have accused the presidency of prioritising personal relationships over national security, expressing frustration that the country’s top security officials are allegedly outside Nigeria simultaneously.

Commentators also raised longstanding concerns about the structure of the national security architecture. They argue that the NSA position should be handled by individuals with deep military or intelligence backgrounds, given the complexity of Nigeria’s current security landscape. They note that several experienced retired intelligence chiefs and former service chiefs could offer stronger leadership during this period of heightened insecurity.

The situation has been further compounded by reports that the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, is currently in Dubai for the 2025 Airshow, while the Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O. Oluyede, is also said to be out of the country—developments that have intensified public criticism.

Many Nigerians are calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action and demonstrate commitment to restoring security by restructuring the national security team and replacing officials perceived as ineffective or unavailable during critical moments.

As security concerns continue to mount, citizens say the government must move swiftly to reassure the public and strengthen coordination within the nation’s defence and intelligence community.
