Medical experts and government officials have raised concerns over the growing burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and obesity in Nigeria, calling for increased investment and public health interventions.

Speaking at a medical conference held in Kano, the Chairman of the occasion, Musa Borodo, lamented the high cost of healthcare delivery in the country. He emphasised the need for practical strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence of chronic health conditions.

Borodo expressed optimism that the conference would help fine-tune public enlightenment initiatives and strengthen disease prevention frameworks nationwide.

In his address, the President of the Association of Clinical Endocrinologists of Nigeria (ACEN), Williams Balogun, urged the government and stakeholders to commit more resources to combating non-communicable diseases.

“This meeting will unveil a variety of ideas and research aimed at ensuring that the challenges of diabetes and obesity are thoroughly addressed,” Balogun stated.

Also speaking, the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, described the conference as timely, given the alarming statistics on non-communicable diseases in the country.

He assured participants of the Kano State Government’s readiness to partner with professional medical associations like ACEN in tackling the health crises.

Governor Yusuf further encouraged participants to develop actionable resolutions capable of curbing the rising rates of diabetes, obesity, and other related health conditions in Nigeria.

The conference is expected to produce policy recommendations and technical frameworks to support government and private-sector-led health initiatives.
