As Nigeria marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the Progressives Alliance Of Nigeria (PAN) has called on citizens and leaders alike to recommit themselves to the ideals of justice, unity, and accountable governance.
In a stirring Democracy Day address delivered by the National Coordinator of the group, Hon. Obioma Nnamani (JP), PAN described June 12 not merely as a day of remembrance, but as a rallying point for all Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey.
“Democracy Day is a day that commemorates not just a date on the calendar, but a powerful symbol of our collective struggle, sacrifice, and resilience in the pursuit of justice, equity, and good governance,” Nnamani said.
The speech paid tribute to the historic June 12, 1993 election and the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, calling the election “a catalyst for the democratic progress we enjoy today” despite its annulment.
PAN acknowledged the strides made since 1999 but emphasized that democracy in Nigeria remains a work in progress. Challenges such as insecurity, poverty, corruption, unemployment, and electoral malpractice were cited as major obstacles still facing the nation.
“True democracy is not a destination; it is a journey, a journey that demands the active participation of all of us,” Nnamani stated. He urged citizens to not only demand accountability from public officeholders but also live out the values of democracy in their daily lives.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to working with all stakeholders—including government, civil society, and the private sector—to build a more equitable and prosperous Nigeria.
“We celebrate our democracy, honour our heroes, and renew our commitment to a better Nigeria,” the address concluded.
Democracy Day, officially moved from May 29 to June 12 in 2018, commemorates the 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the country’s history.
