There was widespread panic in Owerri on Friday after a suspected tornado was spotted forming over a river in parts of the city, sending residents running for safety.

In a viral video circulating on social media, a rotating column of wind appeared to rise from the surface of the river into the sky, creating fear among onlookers who described the incident as unprecedented in the area.

“This is happening live in Owerri. You can see a tornado forming from the river. People are running for their lives. This is the very first time such a thing is happening. Is it climate change or is the world coming to an end?” a visibly shaken man could be heard crying out in the footage.

Eyewitnesses said the unusual weather phenomenon caused confusion and alarm, with many residents abandoning their activities and seeking shelter. Some described strong winds and swirling dust in nearby areas, though the full extent of any damage has not yet been confirmed.

Owerri, the capital of Imo State, is not typically known for tornado activity, making the incident particularly startling for residents.

Weather experts note that while rare, tornado-like formations and waterspouts can occur under certain atmospheric conditions, especially during periods of intense heat and humidity.

More details shortly.
