Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has inaugurated the party’s 2025 Elective Convention Zoning Committee, with a call for fairness, equity, and strategic planning to guide the party’s leadership selection.
The inauguration, held at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, marks a crucial step towards the party’s national convention. The committee is chaired by the Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri.
In his remarks, Damagum described the committee’s work as foundational to the PDP’s future, stating that its decisions will significantly influence the direction of the party over the next four years. He urged members to consider the broader interests of the party and the country.
The acting chairman acknowledged recent leadership challenges and internal changes within the party but emphasized that the PDP remains a vital force in Nigeria’s democracy. He reminded party members that the institution is larger than any individual and called for collective efforts to reposition it for electoral success.
Damagum also reflected on his own experience leading the party, highlighting the need for resilience and clarity in difficult times. He said his priority has been maintaining party unity, protecting democratic structures, and preparing for future elections.
He further stressed that while loyalty is essential, it must be accompanied by confidence and responsibility. He urged the committee to make pragmatic decisions that inspire public trust, particularly at a time when many Nigerians feel disconnected from the political process.
Damagum expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver on its mandate and formally declared their work underway.
In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of the Committee, Governor Douye Diri, pledged that the committee would operate in a consultative and inclusive manner to ensure the development of a fair and just zoning formula for each party.
