PDP Leaders Ignored Call for Caretaker Committee Before Convention – Saraki

Bukola Saraki

Former Governor of Kwara State and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has expressed regret over the current crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying efforts made by some leaders to keep the party united were not fully heeded.

Speaking on the internal challenges facing the opposition party, Saraki said the PDP could have collapsed much earlier if not for the attempts by some stakeholders to hold it together.

According to him, party leaders had proposed the formation of a caretaker committee that would have addressed grievances among members and prepared the party for a more united national convention.

Saraki, however, said the suggestion was ignored, describing the convention held in Ibadan as ill-advised in hindsight.

“It is unfortunate that PDP is where it is today. We tried to keep it together; if it wasn’t for our efforts it would have broken apart long before the ill-advised Ibadan convention,” he said.

He added that the idea behind proposing a caretaker committee was to create a platform where aggrieved members could resolve their differences and help the party organize a more cohesive convention.

The PDP has in recent times been grappling with internal divisions, defections, and leadership disagreements, raising concerns among party members about its unity and future ahead of upcoming political contests.
